SALE REPORT:  JUNE 24-25

Gelding Show! 

Billings, MT - Time honored and performance tested, a big selection of good geldings dominated the weekend’s sale offering at Billings Livestock’s “Summer Special Catalog Sale” June 24-25 featuring team penning horses along with a special section of “Buckskins Only.”  

Montana’s big sky and summer sunshine welcomed 924 head of horses, where the all-out gelding party saw the top sale horse command $12,500, the top five average $9,080, and the top ten bring $7,435.

 19 out of the top 20 selling horses were geldings. 

With 74 “no sales” or pass outs, the weekends sale percentage pushed 92%.                  

 Rope, ranch, or simply ride around, Hip 221 “Pjs Rusty King Joya” a 1998 AQHA Dun Gelding x Pjs Sweet King Joya was the cadillac kind.

 Owned and shown by Elvis and Jackie Entzel, Killdeer, ND, the cool dude claimed top sale honors selling to Paul Beckstead, Lehi, UT for $12,500.

 Joe Benner, Hermiston, OR brought Hip 96 “Scribblemehot” a 99 APHA Sorrel Overo gelding sired by Whitebird Hill and out of a daughter of Scribbles to Billings Livestock.

 Ridden inside, outside, and taught to sit down, the one-of-a-kind gentle giant had been used at brandings all over the Northwest, team penned on, calved on , and used to snub colts.

 The trick pony brought $7,500 and sold to Brian Murphy, Whitefish, MT.

 Boys with the buckskin color gathered plenty of customer interest as “Buckskins Only” sale session entries claimed 25% of the top sale positions.

 Offered by the ranch who raised him and owned his sire,  Hip 104 “Badgers Samie” a 2002 AQHA Buckskin Gelding x Badgers Spirit was brought to town by McCarty Ranching, LLC, Cody, WY.      

                          

 Shown in the team penning competition, the excellent cowhorse brought $7,400 and sold to Joseph Mironack, Columbus, MT.

 Raynesford, MT rancher Walt Johnson consigned Hip 45 “Just Wiley” a 2001 AQHA Buckskin gelding x A royal breeze and out of a Mr Baron Red granddaughter.

 Slick and shiny, the one-owner ranch gelding had been roped on outside and in the arena, drug calves at branding and sold to Daniel Decker, St. Ignatius, MT for $5,800.

 The top five buckskins averaged $5,300.

 Sunday’s sale session included Hip 409 “High Roller” a 91 grade sorrel gelding offered by Anders Ranch, Elm Springs, SD.

 A PRCA Circuit Finalist in the barrel racing, the automatic barrel horse brought $4,900 and sold to John and Faye Copeland, Big Piney, WY.

 The only mare to crack the top 20 was Hip 78 “Smokin Two Chex” a double-bred Bueno Chex Jr. 2002 APHA Bay Tobiano consigned by Bill Vickers, Pocatello, ID.

 Pretty and flat broke-to-ride, the mare had 16 months reining training and sold for $5,000 to Donald Adamson, Arvada, WY.

 Loose horse mania saw 469 head offered on the loose with a whopping $1,049 per head average on the top 50 - a $104/head increase over 2005.

 Top five selling loose horses commanded $2,900, $1,850, $1,825, followed by $1,800 and $1,700.

 Loose horse averages include the top five at $2,015, a $315 per head increase over 2005, top ten at $1,708, top 20 brought $1,387, and the top 100 averaged $816, a $23 per head increase over last year’s figures.

 Overall sale averages, including catalog, loose, and open consignment horses came in at $9,080, for the top five;  top ten at $7,435; Top twenty at $6,013;  top 50 brought $4,199; and the top 100 head of horses sold averaged $3,067 - a $49 per head increase over 2005.

 Billings Livestock’s next sale event is  the “Mid-Summer Catalog Sale” featuring cutting horses - set for July 22 - 23.

 All classes of horses will sell, including finished horses and prospects for ranch, roping, arena, cutting, or recreation.

 Cattle will be available to show the cow horses and rope horses.
