Billings - Stallions set the pace at Billings Livestock Commission Company’s "Winter Special Catalog Sale" event held January 27 .

With style, size, and a pedigree full of proven performers - Hip 40 "Starlight Sam" - a coming two-year-old AQHA Bay stallion consigned by Polo Ranch, Big Horn, WY topped the day's market.

Sired by Polo Ranches’ famous sire - Grays Starlight - the sire of 329 performing age offspring with 220 money earners winning in excess of $5 million - the big, strong colt was out of a money earning and producing daughter of Doc O’Lena.

Riley Ranch Quarter Horses, Bart Riley, Buxton, MT seized the opportunity to own a Grays Starlight and purchased the stallion for $9,000. Interest in the horse was prime, with Riley Ranch’s announcement that the horse will stand in Buxton, MT.

Wearing the "Dragging A" brand and following the leader was "Chex My Credit" a 98 AQHA sorrel stallion sired by Bueno Chex Willie and out of a daughter of Doc’s Prescription.

The good looking, off-to-a-good-start stallion’s genetics told the story - NCHA and NRHA money earners in addition to NRCHA World Champions.

Consigned by Ray Logan, Kechi, KS, the stallion with the credentials brought a final bid of $8,250 and sold to Jim Welch, Columbia Falls, MT.

Sired by reining’s leading sire for the past five years - Hollywood Dun It - "Dun It With Jewels" wore her name fittingly as the 98 AQHA red dun daughter of Tim McQuay’s Million Dollar Sire.

Consigned by Bill Richardson, Crowded Six Ranch, Tyler, TX the started-in-reining-training filly was also out of a World Champion mare and sold for $8,100 to Mel Hutchings, Hutchings Ranch, Thayne, WY.

Bill Richardson and Crowded Six Ranch, Tyler, TX offered a first-class, name brand selection of mares including daughters of Genuine Doc, Mr. Peponita Flo, and Haidas Little Pep.

Strong interest in the ranch and using gelding market where the top two selling geldings brought $5,000 and $4,200.

With at total of 248 horses selling, Billings Livestock set the standard in the loose horse trade with the top three selling loose horses bringing $1,425, $1,085, and $1,050 respectively.

With 20% of the horses selling on January 27 bringing over the $3,000 mark, overall the top five horses averaged $7,970, the top ten $6,145, the top 20 brought $4,485, with the top 50 coming in at $3,014.

Billings Livestock’s next horse sale weekend is February 24-25 and features the "February Catalog Sale" with a special session of "Sons and Daughters" of money earners or Champions. In addition, the MPHRA stallion service auction will kick off the weekend’s activities with 50 stallion services selling Saturday morning.
