A-Game Geldings

Sale weekend was bonused by two well attended previews of sale horses including an indoor, Friday afternoon demonstration at the HorsePalace Arena that included barrel horses, pole horses, cutters, saddle and ride horses, and over 50 team roping runs.

17 out of the top 20 selling horses were geldings and commanded a $4,805 average ticket price.

Leading the charge was Hip 241 “Par To Tari Pines” a 2002 sorrel gelding x Tari Pines For You and out of a daughter of Tee Cross.

Raised and ridden on Colorado’s T Cross Ranches, the 1200 pound, solid ranch and using gelding had been hauled to major cuttings as a turn back horse, seen many miles of work in open country, and competed in ranch horse competitions as recently as a week prior to sale day.

Purchased by Duanne and Nicky Stellflug, Laurel, MT the hard-to-find-kind brought $9,300.

An all-around nice guy, Hip 68 “Dollars Last Time” a 2006 AQHA sorrel gelding x Peptotime and out of Silverdollar Acre x Bob Acre Doc came triple gentle and with a full resume.

Heel, run barrels, or cut, the do-it-all gelding was offered and shown by Pam Gross, Carpenter, WY and sold to Larry and Christy Steinteisser, Sidney, MT for $7,700.

Two mares, both by NCHA Horse of the Year “Smooth As A Cat” cracked the BLS Top 20 list and included Hip 145 “Kaylee Cat” a 2007 AQHA Sorrel mare offered by Bud Fay, Gillette, WY and “Smooth N Black” a 2009 AQHA Black Mare offered by Bill Richardson, Whitesboro, TX.

Safe and gentle, Hip 30 “Otoe San Silver” a 2000 AQHA Gray gelding x Smart San Badger and out of Doc Otoes Sugar consigned by Tom Spencer, Drummond, MT came push-button-broke-to-ride and was a finished rope horse, too.

The good gelding cost $6,500 and sold to Donna Nelson, Huron, SD.

Travis Weinrich, Pierce, NE offered Hip 90 “Doc Leos Boon” a 2003 AQHA red dun gelding x Docs Boon Buddy. The all around ranch gelding had been started right heading and heeling and showed his stuff in the pre-sale demonstrattion.

The easy to look at gelding brought $4,000 and sold to Jorden Krecklau, Noonan, ND.

A big weekend of horses, 937 head in all, met with solid demand for all kinds and all classes.

Top five average $7,240; top ten at $5,940; Top 20 at $4,805; Top 50 brought $3,616; and top 100 head averaged $2,801.

In the loose horse division, prospects shined with the top horse fetching $3,000 followed by $2,300

Top five loose - no halter, no speech, no saddle, no rider - brought $1,760; top ten at $1,251; top 20 averaged $936; top 50 at $650; and the top 100 averaged $511.

Billings Livestock’s next sale event is the “Holiday Special Catalog Sale” featuring performance horses - set for Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, November 24.

The weekend will offer an indoor, climate controlled preview for all horses on Friday, November 23 at the HorsePalace Arena.

All classes of horses will sell, including finished horses and prospects for ranch, roping, arena, cutting, or recreation. Cattle will be available to show the cow horses and rope horses.

Sale Report for September 22-23

Rope Horse Headquarters

From the top-of-the-line kind and all stops in between - hauled, won-on, jackpots, rodeos, kid‘s shows, rope horses came in bunches at Billings Livestock‘s Cow Country Classic Catalog Sale” and “Fall Rope Horse Special” September 22-23.

A weekend total of 873 head of horses were offered, with 135 cataloged in the
“Rope Horse Session”.

Call it shopping made easy, ropers had three opportunities to showcase their rope horses - and buyers had three opportunities to see it all in action - including the tell-all pre-sale jackpot on Friday afternoon.

A pair of ten year old geldings claimed the 2012 Fall BLS Sale Horse Jackpot championship.

Spinning three steers in 25.98, the team of Josh Siggins, Ruidoso Downs, NM aboard Hip 125 “Black” and Chad Turner, Stevensville, MT riding Hip 128 “Scooters Driftin Dust” aced first in the average, collected ropes from The Rope Shop, and claimed the Gordy Alderson championship trophy bits.

Jackpot head-horse champ Hip 125 “Black” a 2002 grade black gelding offered by Siggins Horse Company and piloted by Josh, had been ridden at jackpots and World Series Roping events and came gentle and ranch ridden.

The handsome gelding brought $7,400 and sold to Mitch Svangstu, Noonan, ND.

On the heel side, Hip 128 “Scootrs Driftin Dust” a 2002 AQHA Buckskin gelding x Driftwood Scooter was consigned by Turner Performance Horses and shown by Chad, had been hauled to WTRC and USTRC ropings, stayed gentle, and sold to Jerome Bell, Harlem, MT for $12,000.

The weekend’s top sale honors went to Hip 34 “High Brow Hotrod” a 2004 AQHA sorrel Gelding x Star Trek Nic x Reminic and out of a daughter of High Brow Hickory offered by Slide By Ranch, Ordway, CO.

Cute, quiet, and on his game, the good gelding’s resume included NRCHA earnings, AQHA ROM, and was an AQHA World Show Qualifier.

Also used team sorting, shown in club cuttings, and patterned on barrels, the “do-it-all” gelding brought $15,500 and sold to Denice Hansen, Calgary, Alberta.

11 out of the top 20 selling horses were rope horse session entries, with the top five rope horses averaging $11,550 and the top 20 ropers at $6,900.

Talk about nice, Hip 220 “Pocos My Bue Pine” a 2007 AQHA Blue Roan gelding x Me Quick Poco Bueno was consigned by the Double K Ranch, McCook, NE.

He’d been through all the paces on the ranch, came gentle and kind, and sold to Robert Lunder, Billings, MT for $10,000.

A bang-up sale stuffed full of quality horses saw solid demand from first horse to last. The top five averaged $13,000, top ten at $10,720; top 20 averaged $8,655; top 50 came in at $6,263; and the top 100 horses averaged $4,666.

Loose horse prices held strong as well, as the top five on the loose averaged $1,470, top 10 at $1,245; top 20 at $961; tp 50 at $678; and top 100 at $533.

An expanded sale format is set for October 26-27-28 for Billings Livestock’s “Fall Special Catalog Sale” where three, big days are planned. An indoor, climate and ground controlled preview for the barrel horses, cutters, saddle and ride horses, calf horses, and team roping horses is set for 3 p.m. on Friday, October 26 at the HorsePalace Arena.

Sale Report for August 25-26

It was shine-time for the speed bred kind - including arena horses, prospects, and breeding stock - as Billings Livestock hosted their 14^th annual “August Special Catalog Sale” August 25-26.

The all-out, western weekend welcomed 907 head of horses and kicked off Friday afternoon with a UBRC “Pistols and Crystals” tour stop barrel race while Sunday’s annual “Montana Miniature and Pony” sale wrapped up the two-days of horses and more horses.

Included in the top five selling horses were two finished barrel horses, a true barrel horse prospect, and a proven race stallion. The top five averaged $10,560.

Leader of the pack was Hip 134 “Kats Dainty Gal” a 2001 AQHA sorrel mare by High Brow Cat - the #1 All-Time Leading Cutting Horse Sire- and out of Dainty Playgirl, the $271,000 NCHA money earner and NCHA Open Futurity Champion.

The royal mare sold with her 2012 filly at side - and bred back for 2013 - to Atwood Quarter Horse’s sire, Mr. Skyline Peppy, a $238,000 money earning son of Peppy San Badger.

Offered by Atwood Quarter Horses, Kenwood, CA, the three-in-one package brought $18,000.

Reserve sale honors went to Hip 263 “Cash N In For Bugs” a 2002 AQHA Chestnut gelding x Slick Shadow x One Slick One and out of a Kitaman daughter.

Hauled and won on at every level, from futurities to rodeos, the fancy ride was consigned by Jackie Brand, Harrison, AR, and sold to Clayton Small, Busby, MT for $10,000.

Loaded with star quality and dazzle- one look told you he was special - Hip 246 “Royal Eye Paint” a 2009 AQHA Gray Gelding x Royal Shake Em was “all that and more”.

He came gentle and wanting to please, started on barrels and roping, and was truly a first-class arena prospect.

Offered and shown by Mike and Lorie Diodosio, Fowler, CO, the good colt brought $8,600 and sold to Wade Ryan, Woodruff, UT.

She rode the best, had been through 4-H, ranched on, and ridden by her ten-year-old owner, and Hip 426 “Willow” a 2001 Grade Black Molly Mule was the hard-to-find-kind.

Offered by Sheila Bowman, Pine Bluffs, WY the fancy gal stood 16 hands and sold to Dan Smelka, Helena, MT for $3,700.

Rock-solid sale averages show the top five at $10,560, top ten at $7,870; top 20 brought $5,960; top 50 averaged $4,100 and the top 100 brought $3,016.

Loose market continues it’s strong run as the top five averaged $1,755, top ten at $1,580; top 20 brought $1,280; top 50 at $904; and the top 100 selling loose averaged $667.

Billings Livestock’s annual “Cow Country Classic” catalog sale is next on the BLS Sale agenda September 21-23.

The big, fall sale event will headline “Rope Horses” and host a special 78^th anniversary celebration for Billings Livestock Commission.

Sale Report for July 28-29

Good. Better. Best.

Right from the get-go, better horses and better quality ruled Billings Livestock’s “Mid Summer Special Catalog Sale” July 28-29.

A super shiny set of horses came to town and every class and every kind reveled in an all-around better market.

This sale set an all-time BLS July sale record in both quantity of horses sold - 1,093 head - and in price paid per head. The top 50 horses averaged a smooth $8,275.

An extremely strong July gelding trade saw the top three ranch and general using geldings bring $10,000, $9,300, and $8,500.

Just call her stunning , the weekend’s top sale honors went to Hip 188 “ShesSweeterNPepto” a 2005 AQHA sorrel mare by Jackson Land and Cattle Company’s $19 million dollar sire, Peptoboonsmal, and out of Sweet Lil Lena, a $124,843 money earner by Smart Little Lena.

Offered by Atwood Quarter Horses, Kenwood, CA, the standup mare sold bred to NCHA Futurity Champion “Rockin W” and sold with a rippin’ good filly at side by Colonel Doc Bar Chex.

The top-of-the-line, three-in-one package went to Saltcoats, Saskatchewan with buyer Douglas Hines for $19,500.

Atwood Quarter Horses, Kenwood, CA also consigned Hip 212 and 212X “Cat Called Music” a 2002 AQHA Sorrel Mare by Equistat‘s #1 Leading Cutting Sire, siring the earners of $52 million - “High Brow Cat” and out of A Peppys Melody - a full sister to NCHA Futurity Champion Shania Cee.

Wearing the Waggoner Ranch brand, the mare sold with an extra nice 2012 colt at side by the Atwood Ranch sire, Mr. Skyline Peppy.

Doug Hines purchased the duo for $18,000.

Cutting and cowbred horses were the featured attraction and were shown on cattle Friday evening in a special preview and again during the Saturday pre-sale exhibition, along with the rope horses and saddle and ride horses.

Proof that you cannot hide a good horse in a crowd - even at 10:30 p.m. and selling on the supplement to the catalog, was Hip 356 “Hy Driver” a 2009 AQHA sorrel gelding by Hydrive Cat.

Shown in the previews, the extra-broke, extra-handsome three-year-old offered by Round Mountain Ranch, Longmont, CO and shown by Todd Adolph both cutting and heeling, brought $7,700 and sold to Shane and Erin Sawley, Melville, Saskatchewan.

Big, pretty, and all cowhorse, Hip 149 “Reya Del Noche” a 2006 AQHA Black mare x WR This Cats Smart was offered by Steve Maertens, Big Horn, WY.

Jim Brinkman, Ericson, NE purchased the NRCHA money earning mare for $11,000.

Just flat out good, in every category, the sale averages prove that quality continues to be in demand; the top five horses averaged $16,500; top ten at $14,300; top 20 averaged $11,425, top 50 at $8,275 and the top 100 horses sold averaged $6,101.

There were 65 no-sales or passouts for the weekend and 262 different individuals purchased livestock.

A smoking loose horse trade saw the top five prospects bring $1,515; top ten average $1,330;, top 20 hit $1,080; top 50 at $759; and the top 100 selling loose - no rider, no speech - average $589.

Billings Livestock’s next sale event includes the annual “August Catalog Sale”, and “Montana Miniature and Pony Sale” August 25-26.

UBRC barrel race with $300 added - open to all barrel racers - will kick off the weekend’s activities on Friday afternoon August 24 in the BLS Arena.

Sale horses are encouraged to compete and enter with a $100 bonus awarded to the sale horse clocking the fastest time.

Sale Report for June 23-24

Geldings Go Gung-Ho

Good geldings came and good geldings sold and all-star geldings of all colors and kinds loaded the selection at Billings Livestock’s “Summer Speical Catalog Sale” June 23-24.

Putting it straight into the record books, the two-day June sale offered 930 head for the highest grossing two-day, BLS June sale trade on record.

Leader of the pack was Hip 177 “Mellow Yellow” a 2005 grade palomino gelding offered by RMO Horses, Heber City, UT.

Gentle, willing, ride him anywhere, the confidence building gelding brought $13,000 and sold to Shawn Claymore, McLaughlin, SD.

Jeff and Jodie Bailey, Kennewick, WA brought Hip 37 “My Image Matters” a 2006 AQHA Sorrel gelding x Barpassers Image.

A money-earning head horse, the all-around, broke gelding brought $9,500 and sold to PRCA World Champion Wayne Herman, Halliday, ND.

Shown in the open reined cowhorse and left with a paycheck, gentle enough that kids could ride, ridden in the mountains above Jackson Hole, and Hip 97 “Little Oak Cowboy” a 2007 AQHA Chestnut gelding by Keyhole Cowboy and out of a Little Peppy Pistol daughter brought $6,600.

Consigned by Bonnie Yeaman, Rexburg, ID, the easy-to-own gelding sold to Dennis Miller, Lewistown, PA.

Winston Hansma, Weatherford, TX offered five head from his program including Hip 61 “Cruella Dualville” a 2009 AQHA Sorrel mare x CD Lights.

Shown in the pre-sale cutting preview, the pretty mare brought $8,500 and sold to Michael Thompson, Gonzales, LA.

Run barrels, head or heel, and all in a pretty palomino package, Hip 70 “Chubby It’s Dry” a 2003 AQHA gelding x CLF Zan Its Dry offered and shown by Jeremy Langdeau, Rapid City, SD brought $6,200.

The attractive fellow sold to Jill Pischke, New Castle, WY.

Super summer sale averages show the top five at $9,280; top ten brought $7,900; top 20 came in at $6,745; top 50 average $5,140; and the top 100 brought $3,946 each.

On the loose, the prospect market was big news where the top horse brought $2,800 and the top five averaged $2,280; top ten figured at $1,860; top 20 brought $1,467; top 50 at $1,073 and the top 100 averaged $785.

Billings Livestock’s next sale event will be July 28-29.

The annual “Mid-Summer” Catalog Sale – features cutting and cow bred horses – with two full days of horse sales and previews.

All classes of horses will sell, including finished horses and prospects for ranch, roping, arena, cutting, or recreation.

Designed to allow the sellers an opportunity to showcase their consignments and at the same time, giving the buyer an honest, professional opportunity to assess the horses, Friday’s special preview of cutting horses on cattle will begin at 5 p.m. in the BLS Arena.

Saturday’s preview begins at 9 a.m. with another look at the cutters on cattle, followed by the saddle and ride horse demonstrations, with calf horses and team roping horses showing at 11 a.m. Catalog Sale Time is 12 Noon each day. Loose horses sell at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning.

300 plus catalog horses are expected with a catalog closing date of Thursday, July 5.

Sale Report for May 26-27

Ranch horses had their day as one after the next, good horses and more good horses loaded Billings Livestock’s “Cow Country Classic Catalog Sale” May 26-27.

“Best of the Remuda” Ranch horse competition showcased the weekend’s ranch horses as 46 head of horses demonstrated their abilities in a judged competition on Friday afternoon where Hip 111 “Wyo Cowboys Kid” a 2002 AQHA Red Roan Gelding and Matt Severe, Rogerson, ID took home the championship title.

It just keeps on getting better - better quality horses with better skill sets met with a better market as the top twenty averaged a smooth $9,850.

At the top of the class was Hip 133 “Pepto Rio Playboy” a 2001 AQHA Sorrel stallion x Peptoboonsmal and out of Barbi Freckles Rio x Freckles Playboy.

With $105,000 in NCHA earnings himself, the classy stallion had sired 12 money or point earners to date, including a $27,000 winner.

Offered by Bill Richarcdson, Whitesboro, TX, the grand gentleman brought $22,000 and sold to Circle T Ranch, Antonio, CO.

Double K Ranch, McCook, NE brought an exceptional set of geldings to Billings including Hip 94 “Nolans Continental” a 2007 AQHA Red Roan by Four Flyer x Eddie 1987 and out of Freckles Lady San.

The big, strong, fancy gelding wore a #1 shoe, came gentle, soft, stump broke, could drive and pull a wagon and was everything in a pretty strawberry roan package.

A true rope horse prospect, the good gelding brought $15,000 and sold to Theodore Danks, Mandaree, ND.

He was one stylish gelding and Hip 112 “Neo Cougar” a 2008 AQHA sorrel gelding x High Brow Cougar was out of a Dual Pep daughter.

Ready for his next job, the gelding with the kind personality and good foundation was offered by Jeff Chaney, Welch, OK.

Shane and Jamie Johnson, Watford City, ND purchased the quality gelding for $10,000.

Talk about flashy and the ranching business, he showed it in Friday’s competition, Hip 202 “Lynn and Leos Sun Up” a 2006 AQHA Palomino gelding x JX Leo Sun UP x Lad Leo placed 5^th in the contest and brought $7,900.

An absolute supersale from beginning to end, the sale averages reflect strong market demand for a good horse.

The top five averaged $16,440, top ten at $12,740, top 20 brought $9,850, top 50 averaged $7,160, and the top 100 brought $5,253.

Loose sale offered 494 head on Sunday morning where the top horse brought $1,600 and the top five averaged $1,425, top ten at $1,267, top 20 came in at $1,114, top 50 averaged $858, and top 100 at $636.

Next on the BLS sale schedule is the “Summer Special Catalog Sale” June 23-24.

Featuring “Team Penning and Sorting” horses, all classes and types of horses will sell including rope horses, cutters, reiners, prospects, mares, stallions, and finished arena and using horses.

Sale Report for April 28-29

Jam-up rodeo horses, ready-to-roll jackpot rides, and a super set of prospects loaded Billings Livestock's 14th annual "Rope Horse Special" catalog sale April 28-29.

With a final tally of 761 horses and 26 roping steers, the rope horses shined at a pre-sale jackpot held Friday afternoon at the Horse Palace Arena.

Welcoming 126 teams, the tell-all competition allowed the consignors to show their horses in a contest setting and gave buyers the opportunity to closely shop the rope horses.

They put it on three steers in 19.63 seconds and the team of Delon Parker, Billings, MT piloting Hip 197 and Travis Griemsman, Worland, WY riding Hip 63 for owner Dean Barent also from Worland, claimed the jackpot championship, Gordy Alderson Trophy Bits, The Rope Shop ropes, and $359 in cash.

Rope horses and barrel horses ruled the high sellers list as the top ten selling horses of the weekend - eight rope horses and two barrel horses - averaged $8,525.

Hip 197 "Rosebud Biscuit" a 2005 AQHA Sorrel gelding x Kings Hot Peppy x Sizzlin King offered and shown by Delon Parker, Billings, MT earned top sale honors with a $15,000 sale price.

Purchased by Blaine Stevens, Williston, ND the rock solid head horse came broke, gentle, and ready-to-haul.

Turner Performance Horses, Stevensville, MT offered Hip 110 "Rainbows Willy Gent" a 2004 AQHA Bay Roan gelding x Rainbow Gentleman and out of a Wilywood daughter.

Honest, easy to ride, and the "put you where you need to be every trip out of the box" kind brought $9,750 and sold to Bob Meyer, Pleasant Dale, NE.

Dean and Gina Welch, Cottonwood Ranch, Silesia, MT consigned Hip 159 "HK Johnny Walker Red" a 2005 AQHA Bay Gelding x HKS Bossy Doc.

Tried and true, the heel horse adjusted to each level of rider, from beginner to pro, had been ridden by kids, and was good-to-go.

The attractive gelding brought $9,500 and sold to Ian Pennington, Sidney, MT.
